The General Directorate for Book, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB), under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, aims to plan and support the development of the Portuguese Public Library Network (RNBP).

To this end, the DGLAB provides technical and financial support to municipalities for the creation and installation of public libraries, as well as plans and develops services for the libraries.

At the moment, the RNBP integrates 239 municipalities and counts with 409 public libraries (central and branch) and 70 mobile libraries. See libraries' address list.

DGLAB has been collecting statistical data since 1993 through the RNBP annual survey. See  General chart of library resources and services.
